Weather in Portugal – Portuguese climate
Portugal is a warm and inviting country in many ways, and it is an established holiday destination for various reasons; however, one main factor in particular is the favourable climate. As with most countries, the southern regions are warmer, and these are where the main holiday resorts can be found. Portugal is divided into 18 districts on the mainland and two autonomous regions – Madeira and the Azores.
The majority of holidaymakers and property investors head to the Algarve, Lisbon, and Madeira regions, so we will concentrate on those areas for the weather and climate reports.
Portugal enjoys on average 300 days of sunshine per year, which is around 2,800 hours, with warm spring times, hot dry summers, and mild winters. The misconception is that Portugal does not have four seasons; it does. However, the climate is typically Mediterranean in the south and more Atlantic in the north, with lots of sunshine, mild temperatures during the winter months, and moderate rainfall.

The Lisbon region – Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, and Setubal The Lisbon region’s average air temperature in the winter is 11°C and reaches 27°C in the summer. In the Lisbon region, the winter sea temperature is 15°C, and during the summer, it is 20°C.
The Algarve region – Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, and Tavira The Algarve’s average air temperature ranges from its lowest at 12°C in the winter months to summer highs of 30°C. The average sea temperature in the Algarve in winter is 16°C and in summer is 22°C.
The Madeira region – Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico, and Santana The Madeira area’s average air temperature is 16°C at its lowest in the winter to a summer high of 26°C. The Madeira Sea temperature in the winter is 18°C, while in the summer, it is 23°C.

The summer season in Portugal is from June to September, with the best months to visit being June, July, August, and September for maximum sunshine and the hottest temperatures. However, you may find sightseeing more comfortable in the spring or autumn months of April, May, and October when it’s a little cooler.
